Roztoky u Semil

Roztoky u Semil 42, Roztoky u Semil, 513 01

The Roztocký Mlýn is an example of a traditional water mill in the region of the Krkonoše, with a three hundred year long history of the Fiedler family of millers.

The old mill in Roztoky near Semily is a typical traditional mill in the Krkonoše region. The mill is located on the Staroveský Potok that springs in Vysoké nad Jizerou, in the romantic Fiedlerovo Údolí. There used to be four mills on the Staroveský Potok; one of them burned down before the Second World War. At present, there is only one of them, house number 42. The valley was named after a famous family of millers, the Fiedlers, who operated the mill for three centuries.

In the second half of the 19th century, not far from the mill a cutting shop was established where glass rings were ground; there was a bakery as well. The place was famous for tasty, wonderful-smelling bread made of rye. The bread was distributed by a horse and coach in the surrounding villages.

The difficult renovation of the mill and its equipment was commenced in 1990: at present, in the last preserved mill on the Staroveský Potok, you can explore a part of the history of miller and baker crafts and skills in the region of Krkonoše.

Mill for adults and children
The mill is a popular destination for school trips, family trips and history lovers. Younger visitors come across fairy-tale heroes, such a watersprite, Albína the Witch, Terezka and Žofie. The little devil, named Roháček, is able to satisfy good children's wishes. A real magnet for children are local puppets from Kašpárek (Clown) and original toys that once belonged to the children from the mill - they may fulfil secret wishes as well. The adults are usually interested in the museum exhibits of the mill equipment (still in working condition) that comes from the 17th to 19th century. There is a a true rarity - the mill equipment used for cleaning semolina (1840).
