Artificial Caves

Hollows in quartzose sandstones were often used by man as dwellings, or at least as sheds and stables for livestock.

The small resistance of this rock permitted to artificially enlarge natural caves and niches or to create new ones with no much effort. Many signs of such human activity can be traced in the Geopark. Any digging of holes and damage of cliffs are undesirable and illegal now. In former times, however, it was the only way to find accommodation for many inhabitants of this region.
